This was a neat kit of a space ship type rocket. It included lots of fins and large pods on the end of the largest fins.
The parts were typical Estes kit. Everything went together well and the instructions were typical for Estes kits.
This went together quite well. I did add a piece of Kevlar for the shock cord. It was glued to the motor mount and extended just past the top of the tube. The elastic shock cord was tied to that.
Finishing was a little challenging. Getting all the spirals filled and then getting paint into the crannies between the tubes was a little challenging. Overall, it came out quite well.
I love this rocket. I over power this rocket a LOT. I only flew it on D motor for half the flights. The rest were on an E and three F motors. Even with the large fins and pods hanging off, it handles the composite F motors just fine. Really screams but flys nice and straight.
This could use a slightly larger chute, although I swap chutes around so much I don't remember which one was the original with this kit.
I tend to use small chutes sometimes on windy days. I fly high with larger then recommended motors so go with the smaller chute to get it back down in the same county. That tends to break the fins off.
The good thing is the fins don't break, the paper layer on the tube peels off and a little wood glue puts the fin right back in place.
Very sturdy and good flying rocket. Handles E and F motors very well. Has some issues with snapping fins off on landings, but that is probably more my fault for using too small of chute then a problem with the kit.
The latest incarnation of the Estes Renegade kit has changed the rocket from a 2-stage to a single-stage, probably because of the booster stage's tendency to semi-glide recover at a rather high rate of speed. My daughter chose the kit at the local hobby shop, because "lots of fins are cool, daddy!" I have been impressed with the quality I have been seeing from the newer Skill 2 or higher ...
