Manufacturer: Scale Kits

Brief:
29mm military style mid power kit with parachute recovery.

Rocket Pic

Construction:
The kit includes:

  • Super thick, "heavy duty" airframe tubing
  • Beautiful 5-ply 1/8" fins
  • Thick, 26" rip-stop nylon chute
  • Thick round bungee cord type shock cord
  • Solid balsa tail cone
  • Laser cut centering rings

Tail ConeThe kit went together fast. The instructions are easy to read and describe exactly what is needed. Graphics depict many of the steps along the way. The fins were nice aircraft ply and straight as an arrow. The kit comes with clay for moving the CG forward.

Finishing:
The instructions show three different color schemes. All the parts fit exceptionally well. The balsa tail cone was a snap to finish. A few coats of primer and sanding sealed it up well. The decals are the Alps printer waterslide type. They are only black and you must cut them out.

Flight:
The Scale Kits Alarmrecommended motor choice is limited to 4 motors. I'm sure one could add to the list but you must pay attention to the CG and keep in mind that the fins are surface mounted. In this instance, speed kills. I bet this puppy would really move on an Ellis Mountain G35!

To keep it simple, I used an Aerotech F25 for its first flight. There is no engine hook or block on this model so the masking tape friction fit method must be employed.

The flight was straight and the 6-second delay was perfect. The chute was tangled so the trip back to earth was on the fast side.

Recovery:
The parachute is nice and heavy. The elastic shock cord is a little too stiff and heavy and may be the reason for it getting tangled in the chute. This however is not a con. Too many times have people wished they had a better shock cord after it broke.

Flight Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary:
This is a solid design with a unique fin placement. The one drawback is the surface mounted fins. If these were through the wall, the motor choice would be huge. Overall, this is a great value and a great kit for the money.
