FlisKits Triskelion

Brief:
The pride of the thrall fleet, Triskelion. The Triskelion is a unique skill level 1 rocket. With its high quality instructions and laser cut fins, this rocket can easily built in 2-3 hours.

Construction:
As far as the actual components are concerned, the kit includes:

  • 1 Ogive nose cone
  • 1 8.5" BT-55 body tube
  • 1 Engine tube
  • 6 Laser cut fins, 3 main fins and 3 fin tips
  • 1 Shock cord, elastic
  • 1 Parachute, shroud line, and tape disks
  • 1 Screw eye
  • 3 Tooth picks
  • 1 Engine block
  • 1 Launch lug
  • 2 Centering rings, fiber
  • 1 Centering ring, paper
  • Fin pattern sheet and instructions

Fliskits instructions are easy to follow, very well illustrated and are written in a logical fashion. This kit includes a fin pattern sheet to help you with the correct alignment of the fin tips and main fins to the body tube.

Make sure that your first step is to glue the CRP 50-55 (paper) centering ring to the center of the template making sure the glue is dry before placing the body tube on the centering ring. Assemble the engine mount and let it dry, then glue the engine mount into the body tube and make sure that the engine hook is flush with the end of the body tube.

The laser cut fins are high quality balsa and easy to work with. You first attach the fin tips to the main fins. You can use the fin template to ensure your tips are square or use two small 90-degree engineering squares. Make sure that the fin tips have dried. Next you apply glue to the root edge of the main fin make sure you don't use too much glue or glue the fins to the template, then line it up on the fin template and let it dry. You just can't go wrong using this fin template system.

Toothpicks are added to the fin tips. The shock cord is glue into the standard 3-fold mount and the mount is glued into the body tube. The parachute is assembled and attached with the shock cord to the nose cone.

Finishing:
No decals are included in the kit, but you can use the fin pattern sheet, which shows a rather unique pattern design. A light sanding on the body tube with 400 grit sandpaper and I applied one coat of Holts auto primer. I used two different colors of Tamiya paint, a light metallic blue (TS-54) for the body tube and nose cone, metallic green (ST-20) for the fins and fin tips and nose cone. The Tamiya paint covers in one or two passes and dries very hard. I opted not to use a gloss clear coat since that takes away from the metallic colors.

Flight:
The flights were on a somewhat blustery day with winds at about 12 kph. The first flight was on an A8-3. The rocket screamed off the pad for a nice, stable, and straight flight. Ejection happened before apogee and I recovered the rocket with no damage.

The second flight was on a B6-4. That was a fast launch! The rocket went all but out of sight because of the low hanging clouds. Ejection happened way after apogee and I recovered the rocket with damage to one of the main fin cause by the nose cone.

The third flight was on A8-5, which was a stable and straight flight. Ejection happened at apogee and I recovered the rocket with damage to one of the fin tips, which snapped off on landing.

Recovery:
The parachute deployed perfectly on all flights, however, the 9" parachute allowed a fast descent and not lot of drift. I would recommend a 12" chute for windy days.

Flight Rating: 4 out of 5

Summary:
This is one of those rockets that is easy to build and fun to look at. The Triskelion should be in everyone's fleet.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5
