Rick Barnes's D-Region Tomahawk - MIA
Manufacturer:Estes
Length:38.0000 inches
Skill Level:1
Style:Scale

Stock build of the Estes D-Region Tomahawk kit that was recently discontinued.  Though I wonder if that's really true, since although the page on this site for the kit shows as OOP, made 2007-2010, the Estes catalogs show it right through 2014.

Anyway, this kit is easy to build, nice level of detail.  The color scheme looks simple enough, but there are 5 different colors used.  Painting took several weeks to finish, with the combination of sanding, spraying, masking & more spraying.  Scale drawings I found elsewhere had more detail in the color scheme then Estes offered in the instructions, so I painted per that.  I popped one of the fins off during sanding and had to reattach while half painted.  I don't think that the Testors model cement is as effective on the plastic parts as it ought to be; I used epoxy to put the fin back on and suspect I'll have to repeat this 3 more times...  Per the recommendations of other modelers, I replaced the 18" included parachute with a 24" ripstop chute, so hopefully that will help the issue.  I've also added a nomex heat shield for it.  I like this one enough that I might build another, just because it went together so nice and has good detail - maybe with a 29mm mount...

Unfortunately, this rocket's only flight saw it lost to the top of a 60' tree.  I'm not sure that its likely to come down, so I may be building another after all...
