Chute deployment is the most violent phase of flight. Excess speed tears & shreds chutes. The SLIDER softens deployment by opening the chute gradually & stops the chute from "popping" open. At the instant of deployment, it slides down the shrouds, making the chute open a fraction of a second later - -enough to make all the difference.
