Qu8ke (pronounced "Quake") is a fourteen-foot long, eight-diameter rocket built by Derek Deville as an attempt to claim the Carmack Prize. The rocket flew to 121,000 feet in September of 2011, but failed to meet other requirements of the prize when the on-board GPS devices were unable to obtain a positional lock.
Qu8ke used the equivalent of a Q18000 motor which produced 4000 pounds of thrust for eight seconds. In addition to on-board electronics to deploy the recovery system, the rocket carried several GPS units to record the altitude obtained and to transmit the rocket's location to help it be found after landing. The rocket also carried three video cameras and a cosmic-ray detector supplied by the Symbiosis Foundation’s Ergo project.
