Flight Log - 2012-09-07 - Paul Nortness's BT-60 Viking Upscale

The rocket is an upscaled version of the Estes Viking. I went from the original BT-20 to a BT-60 tube, the body itself is 19.5 inches and is recycled from the top of a Mean Machine that had a boo-boo on launch. The fins are 1/8" basswood filleted with epoxy and the nosecone is a Semroc BNC-60G4.

The motor mount is 24mm with a screw top retainer. I added a thrust ring into the tube so I can fly it with my 24/40 reloads or Estes BP motors.

Maiden flight. The rocket looked great going up, straight flight path on the D15 Blue Thunder. We heard the pop of the ejection charge, but the nose cone never separated...later inspection found an incorrectly installed delay grain to be the issue. The rocket entered a horizontal tumble and came down hard on the fins. One fin broke clean off, with another badly damaged. Rocket is a loss. On the plus side, the Gatorade cap worked flawlessly as a screw on retainer.
