Okuda was once the president of a rocketry club in Hawaii where he was known to sometimes show up at meetings or launches wearing a Star Trek shirt that looked like Captain Kirk's uniform. Later, as a graphic designer and scenic artist, he developed the distinctive Star Trek displays first seen in Star Trek: The Voyage Home.
During his early years working on Star Trek, Okuda sometimes reached out to G. Harry Stine for inspiration and advice. Okuda paid tribute to Stine by naming a Federation spaceship the USS White Sands and acknowledged his rocketry passion by creating the NAR prefix for some Federation ships which were not a part of Starfleet.
Okuda has also designed mission patches for NASA.
