Testing the separation charges for going dual deploy with my Madcow Mini Frenzy. I figured the avbay on this was too small to hook my shop vac up to, so I simply ran the e-match wires out and ignited them with my Estes launch controller. Because there is very little room in the Mini Frenzy to work with, I do not have charge canisters on the avbay bulkheads. Instead, I am running the e-match heads loose in the parachute compartments, and stuff the head and the appropriate amount of black powder into the cutoff tip of a latext glove finger. Using this method, I can place the match head below the recovery gear in the drogue compartment, pushing everything out instead of blowing the the avbay and payload section off hard enough to pull the recovery gear out. Using an online charge calculator, I figured both the drogue and main sections each needed 0.6 grams of 4F black powder. This size worked great on the drogue, but punched the main section hard enough to stretch the 12' kevlar harness tight and snap the nose cone back. Obviously a bit much, but there was no damage and I'll downsize the main charge to 0.5 grams when I fly the rocket next. Looking forward to seeing dual deploy work in this relatively small, high-performance kit.
