Flight Log - 2013-01-19 - K Sonesen's Sardo XXL (Tube Fin)

This is a Larry Brand design that can be found here on EMRR Rocket Reviews if you search on "Larry Brand" or "Sardo XXL".

This rocket has a 38mm motor mount and is constructed using mostly LOC parts although I did use simple postal mailing tubes for the airframe and tube fins.  The tube fins are laminated with an inner half-doubler made from postal tube.  All up weight (recovery, links, nomex blanket, 36" Topflight chute but NO MOTOR) is approximately 35 oz.

Larry Brand describes this rocket as an upscale of his Auracle 54 design which I have also built and named "Steppin' Razor".  Therefore, this one is named "Steppin' Razor II".

I made my level 1 certification flight with this bird. Successfully, too.

This rocket has been updated to dual deploy in 2015.

Flight Date: 2013-01-19
Rocket Name: Sardo XXL (Tube Fin)
Flyer's Name: K Sonesen
Motors: I161W-7
Expected Altitude: 1,600 Feet
Wind Speed: 4.00 mph
Launch Site: SARG - Amoruso Field

It was a beautiful day but the high power pads were just about ready to close so I barely got the bird prepped and skipped the pre-flight weigh-in so I have no pad weight for this flight.

For some reason I had it in my mind that the I161 was a smoky but the moment it lit, I remembered it was an I161W.

The liftoff was very quick and the boost took the bird up higher than I thought 1600 feet actually was.  No altimeter was on board so let's just say even with the chute deployed it was specked out in the sky. Not much breeze up there and the rocket remained directly overhead until it had descendd to about 700 feet.  The ground breeze however carried it about 1/3 of mile across the field.  Figures, right?
