This starter set contains an Estes Port-a-pad, a Launch Controller, three engines, and two rocket kits; the Goliath and the Spitfire. Everything comes packaged in plastic bags inside a cardboard box you can use as a light-duty field-box.
The Port-a-pad must be assembled, a trivial job, and then stickers applied to it and the launch controller. You will need to buy 4 AA batteries for the controller. The pad and controller are basic, but good enough to do the job.
The Goliath is an E2X kit, which is Estes for ‘almost ready to fly’. It's a big, hefty rocket, perfect for younger fliers. Easily built using plastic model glue, the body tubes are precolored, and you get black plastic fins and nose cone. My 9 year old daughter built hers in a couple hours, with most of the time spent waiting for glue to dry. You'll definitely get a better looking model if you take a little time with some fine sandpaper to smooth flash lines on the plastic pieces. Be sure to test-fit parts together before gluing, because the overall the fit is good, but some assemblies can be a little intricate. The diagrams in the instructions are very good, and following them will help you build a better model. One step where you definitely need to ignore the directions is the shock cord mount. I recommend using a regular Estes paper mount up near the nose cone (like the Spitfire) instead of tying it to the coupler crosspiece, right in the path of the ejection charge. Always recommended is to replace the supplied shock cord with a piece of sewing elastic at least twice the body length. I do like the twist-on motor mount. Twist off, insert engine, and twist on for positive retention. Big stick-on decals complete the rocket.
The Goliath does ok on B engines, but a C will give a much more satisfying flight.
The second kit in the set is the Spitfire, a Beta (beginner) level rocket. Small and quick, it makes a nice contrast to the Goliath. The design suggests a space-fighter with forward-swept fins and canopy and winglets molded into the plastic nose cone. The fins are die-cut balsa. The balsa in our kit was broken in half, but along the die-cut lines so there was no damage to the fins themselves. This rocket takes a little more craftsmanship and care to assemble. You'll need white or yellow glue for construction, and replace the shock cord as mentioned for the Goliath. Finish with spray paint and the stick-on decals, and you've got a fun rocket.
This rocket screams on a C engine, probably too much for small fields.
Overall, this is a very good starter set. You can occasionally find a package offering a $5.00 rebate from Estes, making this even better.
